Finding Comfort in Endings: Signs from Spirit + September’s Astrology

Lately I’ve been starting my mornings by writing out daily intentions. At first, these were simple lists of what I hoped the day might bring. But recently I shifted them into gratitude, writing “thank you for X,” as if it’s already true.

One morning I wrote: “Thank you for the clear messages from Spirit.” This was a new intention, at least in written-form. But that very day, I stepped outside of my house and a monarch butterfly floated dramatically past me. There was no way I couldn’t see it. Still, I didn’t think much of it — funny how we can overlook the very thing we just asked for, right?

If there’s one thing the Universe can do, it’s make a point. Within the hour, Hayley Williams’ iconic voice poured through my car speakers — “I should be over all the butterflies…” — timed perfectly as another butterfly fluttered across my windshield at a red light. Oh, I thought, that’s the message from Spirit.

The more I sat with it, the more I remembered: Butterflies were an early sign from Spirit for me. As a child, when our family cat Lucky didn’t come home one evening, I ached for a chance to say goodbye. After enough days passed, I knew he wasn’t coming back. I sat outside in that sadness and a yellow-and-black butterfly appeared. What arose was an inner-knowing that Lucky was okay. I even heard the faintest “meow,” so clear that for a split second I believed he’d returned. It was his sign — undeniable, gentle, and impossible to miss. It’s one of my earliest memories of conversing with the Spirit realm.

Later, I opened Ted Andrews’ Animal Speak and found this passage about butterfly symbolism:

“Don’t forget that all change is good. Butterfly medicine reminds us to make changes when opportunities present themselves. Transformation is inevitable, but butterfly will help teach you that growth and change does not have to be traumatic. It will teach you that it can occur as gently, as sweetly, and as joyfully as we wish.”

A new moon against a red and grey skyline, signifying change on the horizon.

September’s eclipses carry this same message (full description of key dates below). On September 21, a solar eclipse at 29° Virgo highlights the paradox of endings and beginnings. Eclipses always bring choice points, moments when something must be released so something else can take root. This one especially reminds us that timing is everything — if a door is closing or opening for you now, it’s because there’s something important about right now. Not a year ago, not five years from now, but now.

For those with strong mutable energy in your charts (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), these eclipses may feel especially personal. No matter your sign, the invitation is the same: to find comfort in endings, to trust the timing of change, and to remember that transformation doesn’t have to be hard. Like butterfly medicine, it can be sweet, joyful, and deeply alive.

September Astrology: Key Dates

September 1, 2025: Saturn Retrograde (Rx) re-enters Pisces. Themes and storylines from earlier this year (especially April–May) return as Saturn retraces the final degrees of Pisces. This isn’t about new surprises so much as demonstrating what you’ve learned and integrated so far.

September 2 - 4: Mercury enters Virgo and squares Uranus in Gemini; Mars squares Jupiter in Cancer. Mercury thrives in Virgo, but this year it links with the South Node, pulling in karmic threads. This is a good time for discernment and release, though nit-picky energy may surface. Meanwhile, the Mars/Jupiter square brings tension between how we take action (Mars) and our impulse for growth (Jupiter). Watch for impulsivity.

September 6 - 7: Uranus stations retrograde; lunar eclipse at 15° Pisces. When outer planets station, we feel the ripples. The lunar eclipse across Virgo–Pisces intensifies this moment. On 9/7, the sun, Mercury, and South Node in Virgo oppose the moon and North Node in Pisces. Internal conversations center on trust, surrender, and the difference between control and flow. The moon and North Node point to important conclusions, endings that can and should be trusted, however uncertain the path may feel.

September 13: Mercury cazimi the sun. An enchanting cosmic moment as Mercury catches up to the sun, passes through the heart of it, and begins to outpace it in its orbit. This is a day for “Ah-ha” downloads and is perfect for journaling, meditating, or creating space for intuitive messages.

September 16 - 18: Mars opposes Chiron; Mercury opposes Saturn. Mars in Libra opposes Chiron in Aries, spotlighting wounds that either drive us forward or slow us down. Meet them with compassion, not critique. Mercury’s opposition to Saturn can feel mentally heavy, but it also clarifies where our mindset aligns (or misaligns) with the abundance we seek.

September 19 - 20: Venus enters Virgo and squares Uranus Rx. Relationship themes surface as Venus steps into Virgo, activating eclipse degree points.

September 21: Solar eclipse at 29° Virgo. This eclipse is a bit of a paradox. While a new moon signals fresh cycles, this one carries a signature of something very ancient. Occurring at 29° Virgo, it opposes Saturn, Lord of Time, in Pisces. The 29° point of any sign signals endings and urgency, encouraging us to see the significance of destiny and timing. Something must be released for something new to take root, and there is a reason it’s happening now.

September 22 - 24: Mars enters Scorpio and the sun enters Libra (marking the autumnal Equinox). Mars comes home to Scorpio, strengthening resolve and strategy. The Sun shifts into Libra, balancing light and dark at the Equinox. Immediately, it opposes Neptune Rx in Aries, then harmonizes with Uranus Rx in Gemini and Pluto Rx in Aquarius. This mix invites deep reflection, visionary insights, and the symbolic turn inward.
